Holliday left the game and was replaced by Jeremy Hazelbaker. He went for X-rays, which Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said revealed the fracture in Holliday’s right thumb.

Matheny added Holliday will be evaluated further Friday morning, but a trip to the disabled list seems a foregone conclusion.

When informed of the injury after the game, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said, “That’s awful. I feel horribly about it.”

The 36-year-old outfielder has 19 home runs and a .768 OPS this season.

St. Louis lost 4-3 in 11 innings on a bases-loaded walk.
