According to Deadline, Marvel had been meeting with several candidates for the job, but ultimately decided on DaCosta, who had apparently already been a top contender during these meetings. Her hotly anticipated film Candyman has been thrown around in many a discussion throughout Hollywood and beyond, particularly helped by the fact that Jordan Peele is attached as producer.

Little is still known about Captain Marvel’s sequel aside from the return of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel herself. Writer Megan McDonnell, who is also working on Marvel’s still largely mysterious Disney+ series WandaVision, whipped up the film’s script as well. Given how the character’s abilities are already well established after her appearance in her own film and Avengers: Endgame, it will be interesting to see where the sequel’s story takes things.
This news continues Marvel’s trend of changing up directors between films to give fresh takes on established characters. Hits like Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok and the Russo Brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier likely helped show that mixing things around a bit could lead to some surprising new ideas (and the extra money they brought in surely didn’t hurt). While they still occasionally have repeats, like the Russo Brothers tackling most of the ensemble films and Jon Favreau sticking with the first two Iron Man movies, there’s largely a lot of fresh blood involved with each new entry.
Jordan Peele wanted DaCosta personally as the director of Candyman after seeing her work on 2018’s Little Woods, which served as both her debut as a director and her springboard into the public eye. Moving from your own indie film to a major Marvel production in just two years is one heck of a career boost, and it’s fantastic to see newer directors getting their time to shine like this.
While it’s unsure what kind of time frame can be expected for the film’s shooting (much less its release) thanks to the current state of things, this announcement at least shows that production on the Captain Marvel sequel is still moving along to a degree.
Candyman is currently set to release on October 16.
