Marvel Studios’ recent Disney Plus series What If…? essentially became one of the closest examples people might ever get to seeing fanfiction that’s technically canon. Providing glimpses into alternate timelines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as guided by the enchanting tones of Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher, the hopefully first season of many offered up plenty of new fodder for artists and writers to obsess over. The introductory episode hit the ground running by introducing a new take on Hayley Atwell’s Agent Peggy Carter where she took the supersoldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, and viewers absolutely ate it up.

One such fan was artist ARTOFTIMETRAVEL, whose name alone made them uniquely qualified to cover this particular topic. As a reminder, after having Peggy (now Captain Carter) travel through time and away from Steve, What If…? concluded her story on a bit of a cliffhanger where she found out that he may have somehow found his way back to her. But it was left with just that hint, not even confirming whether the series would see another season to resolve it. ARTOFTIMETRAVEL created a piece that depicts an ideal situation where things played out a bit differently.
Rather than featuring a superpowered Peggy and a non-powered Steve Rogers or vise versa, this artwork brings fans into an entirely different reality where Captain Carter and Captain America both exist in their supersoldier versions. Not only that, but the picture also heavily implies that the 2 heroes are able to finally have the romantic happy ending they deserve, giving a whole new significance to the term “power couple.” Interestingly, the art style opts for the realism of the movies rather than the cartoons seen in What If…? ARTOFTIMETRAVEL confirmed their wishes in the caption, saying “Still hope to see these two meet one day whether in live-action or animated (preferably live-action).”
It’s oddly comforting to see both Captain Carter and Captain America in a live-action style, even if Captain Carter’s depiction is wishful thinking. While her portrayal in What If…? was excellent in both design and execution, this piece of art drives home just how well she would work in person as well. Of course, it might take a bit of work since Atwell would have to bulk up considerably for the part, but hey, nothing wrong with being hopeful.
Even if nothing comes of it, just seeing the 2 of them together conjures up some warm feelings. If anybody deserves happiness, it’s the people who have saved countless universes time and time again. At the very least, they should finally have time for that dance.
What If…? season 1 is now available on Disney Plus.
